CREATIVE PRACTICE OVERVIEW

Project | 01

Street Art and Mural Projects.

Ruchin Soni’s street art practice reflects a sustained engagement with public space as a site of dialogue, pedagogy, and cultural expression. Over the years, he has conceptualized and executed several large-scale mural and street art projects across India and internationally, including collaborations in Mexico and Germany. His works often draw from local narratives, community histories, and social themes, translating them into visually accessible public art. Through workshops and participatory art events, such as the Street Art Workshop in Banaras and public wall projects in Delhi, he has actively involved youth and community members in the creative process. These initiatives aim not only to democratize art but also to activate public consciousness around shared spaces. Soni’s approach is grounded in a belief that street art is not merely decorative, but a powerful medium for storytelling, engagement, and education in the contemporary urban landscape.

Artist book - Oaxaca, Mexico 2015-16

5 Months artist residence in Oaxaca

This artist book is a multidisciplinary exploration inspired by the vibrant people and markets of Oaxaca, Mexico. Combining photography, woodcut prints, drawings, and various printing techniques, the work brings together diverse visual languages to document and interpret everyday life in the region. The project explores the textures, rhythms, and social interactions of local markets, utilizing the artist book format as both a container and a narrative device. Through the layering of media, the book reflects a tactile and immersive experience, offering a personal yet culturally grounded perspective on Oaxaca’s visual and social landscape.

UNDP Project on Medicinal plant. Chhattisgarh, India

Title: JADI DEV (MEDICINE GOD)

Villagers in and around Jabbara are working hard to earn money but are forgetting the usage and qualities of the medicinal plants and tree which grow in the region. This knowledge used to be the fortune of the villagers which is getting lost now.

Old people of the village still know about the medicinal plants but the younger generation does not know about it. The knowledge about these things will die with this old generation of the village. Earlier, the people of this area could cure themselves with the knowledge of medicinal plants but now they all go to the doctor to get themselves checked when they are ill.

We interviewed few old people in and around Jabbara and they were able to identify the medicinal plants and their qualities…

We even met a local Ayurvedic Doctor of Deogarh, and he told us that none of the younger generation is interested in learning this science.

The place has lot of resources in terms of medicinal plants n trees. And although lot of the villagers work with the same to earn money, they do not know how to use it to cure a particular illness.

They have a medicinal plants to cure a Snake bit, to cure malaria fever, Diabetes, mosquito repellent, and many more other illnesses.

The literacy level among the villagers is increasing, prosperity among the families is also increasing, but the traditional knowledge of plants is getting lost.
